While Singapore Airlines has a reputation for offering an exceptional product, booking long-haul, premium-cabin awards with the airline isn’t easy. You can sometimes find award availability using Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan or Air Canada Aeroplan, but you’ll usually find more availability through Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.

KrisFlyer generally charges more miles than other loyalty programs, even on dates with Saver award availability. However, the program offers discounts on select award flights each month through its KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes promotion.

Currently, you can book select promo award flights with a 30% discount if you reserve by Aug. 31 and travel between Sept. 1 and 30. This month, you’ll find discounts on Saver award tickets to select destinations in the Singapore Airlines network.

Here’s how you can maximize this iteration of Singapore KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes.

Singapore KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes offers discounted award flights on select routes Singapore Airlines operates. However, only select flight numbers are discounted each month, so you’ll often only get the discount for travel in one direction.

Discounted flights are between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and SIN and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and from SIN to JFK and from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to SIN.

Remember, you must still find award availability on the KrisFlyer website. Promo awards may not be available on select dates — even ones not listed as blackout dates. When you search, you’ll see the discounted awards listed as “promo” if available.

Additionally, all the flights on your itinerary must qualify for the promotion to access the discounted pricing. So, if there’s a promo reward available for just one direction of your flight, it might be best to book two one-way flights.

Be aware that flights departing Europe are subject to higher taxes and fees than flights leaving the U.S. Plan to spend about 125 euros (about $137) per person in one-way taxes and fees on westbound transatlantic flights.

Earning miles to book this award

It’s easy to earn Singapore KrisFlyer miles. The program is a 1:1 transfer partner with American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards. KrisFlyer is also a 3:1 transfer partner with Marriott Bonvoy, with 5,000 bonus miles offered for every 60,000 points you transfer.

Note that it may take up to 24 hours for the transferred rewards to hit your KrisFlyer account. If they don’t immediately appear, consider calling KrisFlyer to hold award seats until the miles post. Doing so will lock in your award seats, so you won’t have to worry about the availability disappearing. KrisFlyer generally charges a service fee of $25 or 2,500 miles to hold award seats.

How to pay taxes and fees

Use The Platinum Card® from American Express to earn 5 points per dollar spent on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 spent per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar); the Chase Sapphire Reserve® for 3 points per dollar spent on travel; the American Express® Gold Card for 3 points per dollar spent on airfare booked directly with the airline or on amextravel.com; or the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for 2 points per dollar spent on travel.

Bottom line

Singapore Airlines is offering a transatlantic economy-class award for just 17,500 miles. Or, you can book flights between Frankfurt and New York City for as few as 56,700 miles in business class.

These flights can be a great use of transferable credit card points.

Qatar Airways has devalued some Avios sweet spots for award flights on partner airlines including American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, as first reported earlier today by DansDeals.

Historically, Qatar Airways Privilege Club has been a popular, if somewhat niche, loyalty program for U.S. flyers thanks in part to the bargain redemption levels of short-haul flights on Qatar’s U.S. airline partners. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case. And what’s more, Qatar Airways made this devaluation with no notice to its Privilege Club members. It’s just one more reason that travelers should always consider diversifying the types of points and miles they earn and redeem because devaluations like this come all too often.

Here are the details on this latest blow, what flyers can expect, and how you might still be able to get some value from Qatar Airways Avios on short-haul American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights.

Qatar Airways devalues American Airlines and Alaska Airlines short-haul awards

Qatar Airways uses multiple (unpublished) award charts for flights on various airlines.

Although the airline made no announcement that it was changing the chart it uses for American Airlines and Alaska Airlines awards, flight searches reveal that the redemption rates for short-haul American and Alaska routes have indeed gone up. The cost of these flights in Avios has increased by up to 64%, with the shortest routes seeing the most dramatic price hikes. Here is what we have been able to piece together.

This means that even the shortest routes, like a 129-mile flight from Seattle to Portland, Oregon, will set you back at least 9,500 Avios each way.

The good news is that longer-haul flight awards on American and Alaska, as well as redemption requirements for JetBlue flights appear to be unaffected … for the moment. Since this devaluation came with no warning, there’s no telling whether the Qatar Airways Privilege Club intends to make more changes to its award levels in the coming days. So if you were planning to book something using Qatar Airways Avios, do so sooner rather than later.

For now, the Qatar Airways award charts for flights on other partner airlines remains unchanged as well.

What’s the best use of Avios?

Although Qatar Airways award rates for these flights have jumped significantly, in the grand scheme of points and miles, they’re still relatively affordable.

British Airways Executive Club, which also uses Avios as its currency, recently underwent a similar devaluation. The British Airways award chart for Alaska and American partner flights is structured much like Qatar’s, except that each price tier costs a few thousand more Avios.

If you plan to use Avios to book award flights on American or Alaska, you’ll still get the best prices if you book through Qatar Airways. However, depending on what rewards currencies you have, there may be better options.

For instance, if you wanted to fly from Miami to Chicago, a one-way ticket on American booked through Qatar would cost 14,500 Avios in economy or 34,000 in business class.

Or you could book the same flight through American for only 8,500 AAdvantage miles in economy or 26,500 miles in business class.

However, since American uses dynamic pricing, using AAdvantage miles may not always be the cheapest option. You’ll need to double check in each case.

AAdvantage miles are also some of the hardest frequent-flyer miles to earn because the program has very few transfer partners (the same is true for Alaska Mileage Plan miles). You may find it easier to book award flights with Avios since you can transfer them from:

• American Express Membership Rewards
• Bilt Rewards
• Capital One miles
• Chase Ultimate Rewards 

As mentioned, Qatar Airways has not, at time of publication, changed its award chart for JetBlue flights, so may still be able to get great value from your Avios by booking short-haul flights on JetBlue. Here’s the current award chart Qatar uses for JetBlue flights:

So, you could fly from Fort Lauderdale to New York (a 1,070-mile route) on JetBlue for only 8,500 Avios each way in economy.

A comparable route on American or Alaska would cost 13,000 Avios through Qatar Airways or 16,000 through British Airways.

When searching for routes to or from cities that Qatar Airways doesn’t serve, the city or airport may not appear in the destination drop-down menu. That’s okay — just enter the airport code into the destination box and click “Search,” and flight options should appear.

Bottom line

Despite this devaluation, Qatar Airways Avios are still the cheapest type of Avios to book Alaska Airlines and American Airlines award flights.

British Airways’ award chart is pricier than Qatar’s for these partner flights, and it’s much more difficult to book partner award flights on the other airlines that use Avios (Finnair, Iberia and Aer Lingus). You should also always double-check awards on American and Alaska’s own sites if you have their miles to see if you can get a better deal that way.

For now, Avios collectors should keep their eyes peeled, as more devaluations could be in store.

Portland International Airport (PDX) in Portland, Oregon, is undergoing a much-needed $2.15 billion makeover.

While construction has been underway since at least 2020, visitors will likely feel it was all worth the wait when the airport’s temporary walls come down Aug. 14 to reveal the next (and best) part of the project.

Soon, visitors will experience an expansive and reimagined main terminal with a soaring timber roof, the latest in check-in and checkpoint technology, live trees and plants, and plenty of art, shops, restaurants and inviting places to hang out.

Wondering what you can expect? Here’s a first look at what passengers and the public will see at PDX.

This is an airport?

As you walk into the new main terminal, right past the check-in area, you’ll notice a forestlike giant hall with more than 70 live trees, 5,000-plus plants, almost 50 skylights and a soaring 9-acre roof made entirely of Douglas fir wood harvested from all kinds of sustainably managed farms in Oregon and Washington.

The check-in experience

Airline check-in counters are clustered in four carpeted islands perpendicular to the entrance. Passengers flying Alaska Airlines with bags to check will find the newest iteration of the carrier’s automatic bag drop system here. The self-service system encourages passengers to scan their boarding passes, print out and attach bag tags, weigh their bags, pay a checked bag fee (if necessary) and send the bags on their way.

Shops, restaurants and public spaces

On the main floor, you’ll find about a dozen presecurity shops and restaurants (some in pop-up form for now). Current options include Hello From Portland, Steven Smith Teamaker, Orox Leather Co., Paper Epiphanies, The Country Cat and Powell’s Books.

This main terminal area sports two banks of stadium seating with solid wood benches perfect for hanging out before a flight. This space has a stage area for live performances as well. During our visit, we spotted a grand piano ready to be put in place.

The return of the PDX carpet

At the top of each bank of stadium seats are lounges with seating areas. Underfoot, you’ll spot carpeting that brings back the much-loved teal-and-purple pattern that inspired thousands, perhaps millions, of shoe selfies.

The pattern and colors of the original carpet, which was installed across the airport in 1988 and replaced in 2015, were carefully recreated for installation in these lounges and for several other spots in the new main terminal area.

Mezzanine restaurant with views

Loyal Legion, a popular local beer hall, will occupy the mezzanine level of the presecurity main terminal area. In addition to serving more than 90 Oregon beers on tap, this venue will offer great views of the surrounding landscape, including the airfield, as well as a perch to watch the bustling activity in the main hall.

New and improved security checkpoints

The new main hall at PDX has two identical Transportation Security Administration checkpoints equipped with the latest security screening technology. Above each checkpoint is a 120-foot-long video wall displaying shorts about some of the airport art, as well as images inspired by Oregon landscapes. The content on the screens is designed to offer “positive distractions” and changes according to the time of day, the weather and, somehow, the number of people currently in the terminal.

At the carpeted checkpoints, travelers will find TSA officers using Credential Authentication Technology to review travel documents. This means passengers will only need to show a photo ID, not their boarding pass, when passing through.

At six Automated Screening Lanes for general (non-TSA PreCheck) travelers, three passengers at a time will be able to load their belongings into trays. That should speed things up, as will the fact that liquids and electronics will not be removed from bags.

As for the passenger screening process, each checkpoint has five of the newest Advanced Imaging Technology body scanners, which use millimeter wave technology. These machines are wider than previous models and allow passengers to keep their hands at their side, instead of over their heads. According to the TSA, these machines can be used for people who have metal hips, knee replacements or metal pins in their bodies since they are not metal detectors.

An intriguing round, wood “hut” at each checkpoint at PDX serves as a private screening room for travelers who might need additional screening and request that it be done in private.

Bottom line

Passengers at Portland International Airport are about to experience a gleaming new airport terminal, a much-anticipated development for this Alaska Airlines hub and one of the busiest airports in the Pacific Northwest.

From local touches to refreshed public spaces, the terminal overhaul brings a mix of technological advances and aesthetic improvements.

Even classic details like PDX’s iconic carpet are part of the reimagined space. Lovers of the original feature will notice a new version of it linking the old terminal to the updated one.

As airports around the U.S. unveil long-awaited new terminals and face-lifts, PDX can join the ranks of airports you actually want to spend time at.

There’s a new way to earn miles with a major U.S. airline when you stay at a vacation rental property.

On Monday, JetBlue announced a new partnership with Vrbo.

As part of the link-up, you can now book Vrbo stays using JetBlue’s Paisly platform, the carrier’s travel booking site for nonflight reservations. That means you’ll be able to earn JetBlue TrueBlue points for Vrbo reservations and work your way toward Mosaic elite status — including a hefty bonus opportunity over the next couple of weeks.

The move is a win for customers who want to book vacation rentals that are more spacious than a traditional hotel room, like a beach house or a cozy mountain cabin for a fall getaway.

Though Vrbo is already part of a loyalty program known as One Key, which also includes online travel agencies Expedia and Hotels.com, this Vrbo-JetBlue partnership offers travelers a way to earn loyalty currency with a major airline program when they stay at a Vrbo property.

What is Paisly?

Paisly by JetBlue is a travel product service subsidiary of JetBlue. You can use the site to book nonflight trip aspects, from hotel stays to car and home rentals — including, now, through Vrbo.

Earning TrueBlue points through Paisly

TrueBlue members who book travel or otherwise make purchases through Paisly can earn 1 TrueBlue point per dollar spent. They can also work their way toward Mosaic elite status; each $100 spent on Paisly purchases earns 1 Mosaic tile.

Keep in mind that 50 tiles is the qualification benchmark for first-tier Mosaic 1 status. However, when you earn just 10 tiles, you’ll get your first shot at the Perks You Pick menu, which includes rewards like free inflight alcoholic beverages on one trip, early boarding and priority security, among other choices. (You can choose additional perks as you reach 20, 30 and 40 tiles.)

For example, let’s say I wanted to book a week at North Carolina’s Outer Banks and spent $2,500 on an ocean-view beach house booked on Vrbo through Paisly.

That would earn me 2,500 TrueBlue points and 25 Mosaic tiles — halfway to Mosiac 1 elite status. A $5,000 reservation would earn you the status outright.

Keep in mind that you can also earn 1 Mosaic tile for every $1,000 charged to certain JetBlue cobranded credit cards, so if you’re a JetBlue cardholder, it’s a convenient way to stack those earnings.

August promotion

In celebration of the new partnership, JetBlue is also offering a bonus points promotion.

Between now and Aug. 25, you’ll earn 3 TrueBlue points per dollar spent on Vrbo reservations made through Paisly.

That means a $3,000 stay would earn you 9,000 TrueBlue points, which is often more than enough for a one-way domestic flight on its own — and could get you a good chunk of the way to earning a larger redemption.

Bottom line

Finding ways to earn loyalty currency with a major airline or hotel program often requires a bit of creative thinking when you book on a site like Airbnb or Vrbo — though there are ways to do it.

This new partnership between JetBlue’s Paisly and Vrbo gives travelers a new option to do just that.

Those long weekend or weeklong stays common on Vrbo bookings can add up in spending, and this new partnership offers another way to be fully rewarded for the price you pay — beyond whatever you’re charging to a rewards credit card.

If you’re a regular JetBlue flyer, that $3,000 beach house reservation could help put you over the top for Mosaic elite status — or make it possible to enjoy a redemption in the airline’s premium Mint cabin.

However, there are trade-offs you should consider before putting that much spending on a credit card that doesn’t offer any free night certificates or automatic status beyond the lowest level. The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card from Chase offers some interesting perks geared toward small-business owners who are Hyatt loyalists. If you have an excellent credit score of 670 or above and are focused on earning World of Hyatt points and status, this could be a good card for you.

The Hyatt Business card lacks some of the features we typically expect from hotel credit cards, like status beyond the lowest level and free night certificates on your account anniversary. However, it offers a powerful set of perks for business owners who are interested in spending their way toward benefits. If you can take advantage of these spending-based perks, the card easily justifies its $199 annual fee. If not, then this card might not be a long-term keeper for you.

Here’s what you need to know before applying.

World of Hyatt Business credit card pros and cons

Bear in mind that this card is subject to Chase’s standard application rules, including the Chase 5/24 rule — though opening this card won’t add to your 5/24 number.

World of Hyatt Business Credit Card benefits

The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card offers several key perks:

• Up to $100 in Hyatt credits annually: Get a $50 statement credit when you use your card to spend $50 or more at Hyatt hotels and resorts (up to two times per year for a total of $100 in annual credits)
• Discoverist status for you and up to five employees: As the primary account holder, you’ll receive automatic Discoverist status with World of Hyatt and get five Discoverist Upgrade Awards, which you can gift to employees
• Earn stay credits toward status through spending: You’ll receive five tier-qualifying night credits for every $10,000 you spend each calendar year.
• Ability to get a 10% points rebate: If you and your employees collectively spend at least $50,000 in a calendar year, you’ll get 10% bonus points back on up to a total of 200,000 World of Hyatt points you redeem for free night awards, Points + Cash stays, room upgrades, dining and spa services and Find experiences for the remainder of the calendar year
• Hyatt Leverage membership: You’ll receive a complimentary Hyatt Leverage membership, which includes discounts on standard room rates at all participating Hyatt hotels
• No foreign transaction fees

Again, it’s disappointing not to see a higher level of elite status or a free night certificate on this list of benefits. Still, those who stay at Hyatt properties regularly will benefit from the Hyatt credit and Hyatt Leverage membership. And if your small business spends enough with this card, you can enjoy an easier path to status and a 10% points rebate.

Earning points on the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card

As a World of Hyatt Business cardholder, you’ll earn 4 points per dollar spent at Hyatt hotels, participating Small Luxury Hotels of the World and on Find experiences booked through Hyatt.

You will also earn 2 points per dollar spent on fitness club and gym membership purchases as well as in your top three spending categories each quarter through Dec. 31, 2024. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, that will change to your top two categories each quarter. Categories include:

• Dining
• Airline tickets purchased directly from an airline
• Car rental agencies
• Local transit and commuting
• Gas stations
• Internet, cable and phone services
• Social media and search engine advertising
• Shipping

The points-earning rates are adjusted automatically to the categories where you spend the most each quarter, so there’s no need to select your preferred categories. Beyond your bonus categories, you’ll earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

While this stands out as one of the few cards that earns bonus points on gym memberships, you’ll find many other cards that have better earning structures for the other bonus categories. If you aren’t focused on earning the benefits that come from putting high spend on this card, your best bet will be to use it alongside some other cards to maximize your bonus-earning potential.

Redeeming points on the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card

As is expected of a hotel cobranded card, the best use of the World of Hyatt points you’ll earn on the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card is to cover stays at Hyatt properties. You can do this by covering your stay in full, covering part of your stay with points through Hyatt’s “Points + Cash” rate option,  or by using points to upgrade a paid stay.

One of the best things about the World of Hyatt program is that it still uses a published award chart, so you can plan ahead to know how many points you’ll need for a stay. However, each category has different rates for standard, peak and off-peak dates.

To get the most value from your points, use them at either the high or low end of the award chart. TPG content director Summer Hull prefers to stay on the higher end, getting great value from her points by using them to stay at Hyatt resorts or city properties that would otherwise be out of her budget. Conversely, you can maximize your points by staying at the lower end of the award chart. With options as low as 3,500 points, I prefer to stay at Category 1 Hyatt properties when I can to stretch my points as far as possible.

You also have the option to redeem your World of Hyatt points for Avis intermediate rental cars for 6,000 points per day, use them for dining, spa or meeting credits at Hyatt properties, redeem them for Find experiences, or transfer them to some airline programs. However, you’ll generally get lower than our August 2024 valuation of 1.7 cents per-point valuation with these redemption options, so we recommend using your points to cover Hyatt stays when possible.

Which cards compete with the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card?

If you want more perks or a different earning structure, one of these options might be a better fit.

Is the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card worth the annual fee?

If you can take advantage of the two Hyatt statement credits on your World of Hyatt Business Credit Card, you’ll get $100 in value from that perk alone. That lowers your effective annual fee to just $99. While Discoverist status isn’t noteworthy by itself, the fact that you can gift it to five others is solid — though whether that (and the other benefits) are enough to justify the out-of-pocket cost is up to you.

That said, the fact that the card doesn’t offer an annual free night certificate and includes high spending requirements for status means you might get more value from a different card.

Bottom line

The current welcome offer and value from ongoing benefits make the World of Hyatt Business card worth getting for small-business owners who regularly stay at Hyatt properties. This is especially true if you would otherwise fall short of Globalist status but can make up the difference with spending.

However, those who rarely stay at Hyatt properties or who want more benefits for a lower spending requirement will want to go with a different card.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 11- to 13-night South Africa & Madagascar cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line has some of the most robust and varied Africa cruise options of all the big-ship lines, with 13 sailings ranging from 11 to 21 nights in 2025 alone.

Among the most popular offerings is the Cape Town to Mauritius (or reverse) route on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Dawn. These 11- to 13-night cruises combine the highlights of Cape Town with the wildlife wonders of Madagascar. The latter is one of the most enthralling safari destinations in Africa; 90% of the plant and animal species on the island are endemic, including 103 varieties of lemurs. But Madagascar is also a destination that even hardcore safari enthusiasts often skip because flights and lodges are hard to book, making a cruise the perfect way to get there.

NCL’s itineraries also visit Pointe de Galets, Reunion — a lush beach and rainforest area on the Indian Ocean. Norwegian Dawn’s 12-night itinerary adds a stop in Maputo, Mozambique.

Who should go: The 1,944-passenger Norwegian Sky and 2,290-passenger Norwegian Dawn are some of the smallest and oldest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet. They suit cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than what you’ll find on bigger ships. Africa cruises tend to draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit than onboard attractions, but the ships will still entertain you with multiple eateries and bars and lounges, several pools and whirlpools, a casino and a theater with nightly shows.

Azamara: 18-night Western Africa Voyage

Azamara offers an 18-night Western Africa Voyage sailing between the Canary Islands and Cape Town. The 704-passenger Azamara Quest calls on the ports of Dakar, Senegal; Banjul, Gambia; and Luderitz and Walvis Bay, Namibia, along the African coast. The ship also stops at the British-controlled island of St. Helena.

Book excursions to seek out the elusive wild horses of Namibia, take a sightseeing flight over the massive shifting sand dunes of Sossusvlei, race through the desert in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and explore the waterways and villages of Gambia.

Azamara also partners with Micato Safaris for pre- and post-cruise Africa programs to see the “Big Five” (Cape buffaloes, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants and leopards). You can book safaris in Chobe National Park in Botswana or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Who should go: ​​Azamara caters to affluent, well-traveled cruisers who enjoy smaller vessels, a country house ambience and itineraries that focus on destination immersion. (You won’t find waterslides or roller coasters, and that’s exactly how the line’s fans like it.) Azamara creates an immersive African experience with its focus on longer stays in port; for example, the ship spends two full days in Walvis Bay, Namibia. Additionally, the line’s complimentary AzAmazing Evenings program takes cruisers ashore to experience cultural performances in jaw-dropping locations, such as the “Desert Dinner & Fire spinners and Marimba Band” event in Namibia.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: 16-night Shores of Madagascar: Cape Town to Port Louis cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 16-night itinerary along the southern coast of South Africa and on to Mozambique and Madagascar, concluding in Port Louis, Mauritius. The 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor departs Jan. 27, 2026, on this itinerary and then repeats the sailing in reverse, from Port Louis to Cape Town, on Feb. 12, 2026.

Along the way, Regent offers some unique shore excursions that set it apart from other lines. Highlights include safari game drives in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, from Richards Bay; cultural explorations of Durban, South Africa, with visits to Zulu villages in the Valley of a Thousand Hills; and birding in the remote Mayotte, French Comoros.

Who should go: Regent’s all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include airfare, transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. Passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering high-end service.

Fine dining fans will appreciate the multiple onboard dining options, including Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Prime 7 with steakhouse menus. Other diversions on board include the sybaritic Serene Spa and a pool deck, plus boccie, a putting green and golf nets for sea day enrichment.

Oceania Cruises: 14-night Cape Town to Cape Town cruise

If you’d prefer a deeper exploration of southern Africa, Oceania Cruises’ Cape Town to Cape Town cruise Jan. 19. to Feb. 2, 2026, explores South Africa’s coast in an unusual up-and-back itinerary, first exploring the east coast up to Richards Bay, then heading to the island of Madagascar, then looping back to the mainland and stopping in Maputo, Mozambique, before returning back to Cape Town.  

Highlights include Durban, with its golden beaches and enchanting Indian Market, and Port Elizabeth on the southern coast of South Africa, an area nicknamed the “Garden Route” for its verdant foliage. Port Elizabeth is also a popular migratory path for southern right whales that you might spot, along with schools of dolphins, as you sail.

Oceania offers longer Cape Town to Lisbon, Portugal, and Cape Town to Barcelona itineraries (as well as Lisbon and Barcelona to Cape Town sailings) of 25 and 26 nights, too. Ports include the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Along the way, you’ll stop at Walvis Bay on the western coast of Namibia, with its iconic red sand dunes; here, you’ll have a chance to see flamingos, pelicans and thousands of other migratory birds.

Who should go: Oceania Cruises offers a high-end cruising experience with a residential feel similar to staying in an elegant estate. The intimate 670-passenger Nautica features a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you’ll find on mass-market vessels. On board, guests delight in several high-end restaurants offering gourmet cuisine and elegant accommodations.  

Viking: 11-night Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise

Not all Africa cruises are on the ocean. A trip down the Nile River is a tick on many a traveler’s wish list, and Viking offers one of the easiest-to-book options with seven ships sailing its Pharaohs & Pyramids cruises. In 2025 and 2026, sailings depart nearly every day in the October to March high season, though no sailings are scheduled for the second half of June through the end of July.

The round-trip Cairo sailings feel incredibly exclusive, with ships carrying just 82 passengers on board. The itinerary begins with several days in Cairo, where guests can visit the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, museums and souks before sailing down the Nile. Your ship will linger multiple days in Luxor, Egypt, home of the Valley of the Kings; spend a day in Qena, Egypt, to see the Dendera Temple complex; and stop in the ports of Esna, Aswan, Kom Ombo and Edfu, Egypt.

Who should go: Adults-only cruise line Viking appeals to travelers who appreciate a relaxed onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures — in this case, Egyptologists — and shore excursions. The cruise line’s passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking’s fans love the ships’ uncluttered Scandinavian-inspired decor and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino or entertainment spaces beyond the main lounge area, but a shaded pool and sundeck offer a relaxing outdoor venue to watch the river scenery.

AmaWaterways: 9-night Discover Africa cruisetour

If you’re someone who loves the equivalent of a travel buffet and appreciates having a little bit of every experience on your plate, then AmaWaterways‘ incredibly unique Discover Africa cruisetour itinerary is for you. (AmaWaterways also offers Nile cruises.) For this journey, guests start with two full days of guided tours and three nights in a luxury hotel in Cape Town before flying to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and transferring to the Chobe River where you embark on the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen for a four-night cruise traversing the wildlife areas of Botswana, including safari drives into the savannah.

Then, it’s back to Victoria Falls to see the thundering waterfall and explore the area by both steam train and smaller sailing vessel during your two-night stay. The adventure ends with a flight to Johannesburg, where you can continue your adventure independently or with a post-cruise extension or fly home.

Who should go: AmaWaterways attracts active guests who appreciate the multiple included excursion options at every port and the line’s attention to both wellness and exceptional culinary offerings. The river cruise line’s Africa sailings use a chartered ship, so you won’t find its signature Wellness Host leading fitness classes or cuisine vetted by the prestigious culinary organization La Chaine des Rotisseurs. However, Zambezi Queen offers unique activities like fishing and bird-watching, as well as dining that AmaWaterways calls “five-star home-cooked cuisine.” A local mother and son duo from a nearby village prepare all the meals for an authentic taste of the region.

Zambezi Queen also has a plunge pool on the sundeck, so you can soak up the African views while you take a dip. All rooms have balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, so you’re never far from a safari view.

The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card offers mid-tier perks, including automatic Gold Elite status, solid points-earning at Marriott properties and elite night credits. Marriott has six cobranded cards available to new cardholders, with annual fees ranging from $0 to $650 per year. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card sits in the middle, with an annual fee of $250 (see rates and fees).

The card lacks one feature we’ve come to expect with hotel credit cards: a complimentary free night each year on your account anniversary, which may leave you wondering whether it offers enough ongoing benefits to make the annual fee worth paying year after year.

It is worth noting that the recommended credit score for this card is 670 or above and that it has some application restrictions like the rest of the Bonvoy lineup. But if you’re eligible, let’s dig deeper to decide whether the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card merits a place in your wallet.

Bonvoy Bevy Amex welcome offer

The Bonvoy Bevy Amex currently offers 155,000 bonus points after using your card to spend $5,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months of card membership. Offer ends Oct. 2.

Based on TPG’s August 2024 valuations of Marriott points at 0.85 cents each, the 155,000 points are worth $1,318. This is close to the best-ever offer we have seen for the card and is highly worth considering if you’ve been eyeing it for some time.

Remember that Amex has restrictions limiting your ability to collect a new member bonus if you’ve had similar Marriott products from Chase or previous Starwood Preferred Guest cards from American Express. Check the card’s offer details page to ensure you’re eligible.

Bonvoy Bevy Amex benefits

Where the Bonvoy Bevy Amex shines the most is in the perks it offers:

• Marriott Gold Elite status: Primary cardholders receive complimentary Marriott Gold status for as long as they have the card. TPG values Marriott’s Gold status at $805 per year. At Marriott Bonvoy’s mid-tier level, the most valuable benefits of Gold status are upgrades to enhanced rooms and a 25% points bonus on hotel spending (available for Qualifying Rates). Typically, we have seen the ability to spend your way to higher levels of elite status with many hotel credit cards, but that’s noticeably absent on the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card. Enrollment is required in advance for this elite status benefit.
• Annual free night award via spending: Cardholders who make at least $15,000 in eligible purchases during the calendar year can earn a free night award worth up to 50,000 points at participating hotels (although certain hotels have mandatory resort charges). That’s more valuable than the free night certificates that come with the lower-tier Marriott cards, which are capped at 35,000 points. Some of the best uses of the 50,000-point free night certificate include luxury hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton, Macau and The St. Regis Langkawi, where rooms routinely top $500 per night — though Marriott’s dynamic pricing can affect the ability to book some of these properties during peak travel dates. Some other Bonvoy cards offer free night certificates without any spending, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card.

• Elite night credits: Cardholders will receive 15 elite qualifying night credits each calendar year. This benefit can be stacked with the nights you earn with a Marriott small-business card, allowing you to fast-track up to 30 elite nights per year. For reference, you need 50 nights per year to qualify for Platinum Elite status.
• Travel protections: This card offers trip delay insurance* for trips delayed by more than 12 hours due to a covered reason, as well as baggage insurance** coverage and secondary car rental loss and damage insurance.***
• Shopping protections: Purchases made with the card can get 90 days of purchase protection** and up to one year of extended warranty coverage** on warranties of five years or less on covered purchases in the U.S. or its territories or possessions.

While these perks offer some value, it’s disappointing not to see a free night award given automatically on the card’s account anniversary each year and other premium perks like reimbursement for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Earning points on the Bonvoy Bevy Amex

The Bonvoy Bevy Amex’s earning rates feel familiar. However, they differ slightly from those of other Marriott credit cards, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card.

Cardholders will earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on eligible purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program, 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 per year in combined purchases at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (then 2 points per dollar after reaching this limit) and 2 points per dollar on other eligible purchases.

TPG’s valuations peg Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.85 cents apiece. This means your rate of return on spending will be 5.1% (purchases earning 6 points per dollar), 3.4% (purchases earning 4 points per dollar) or 1.7% (other purchases earning 2 points per dollar).

Redeeming points on the Bonvoy Bevy Amex

There are many lucrative ways to redeem your Marriott Bonvoy points. The obvious and most valuable redemption is for free stays. With the ability to book more than 8,000 properties across 30 brands in nearly 140 countries, you’ve got a lot of choices.

Beyond hotel stays, you can transfer your Bonvoy points to airline partners, use them to cover flights, car rentals and cruises or redeem them for merchandise and gift cards. However, these options will likely yield well below TPG’s August 2024 valuation of Marriott points is 0.85 cents per point, so we recommend using your points for Bonvoy stays whenever possible.

TPG senior points and miles writer Katie Genter gets great value from her Marriott points by redeeming for stays in increments of five nights to maximize Marriott’s stay for five, pay for four offer. She’ll occasionally consider transferring points to one of Marriott’s airline partners but usually prefers to save her points for stays.

Transferring points on the Bonvoy Bevy Amex

You can also transfer your Bonvoy points to more than 35 airline partners, but this rarely offers good value unless you need to top off an account balance for flight redemptions.

You may also consider this option if you want access to the frequent flyer points or miles of an airline that doesn’t partner with any of the major U.S. credit card issuers.

Which cards compete with the Bonvoy Bevy Amex?

If you want more or different hotel benefits, one of these cards may be a better fit:

• Earn 24,000 bonus Bonvoy points for every qualifying stay at a Homes & Villas by Marriott vacation rental. A qualifying stay is a minimum of two nights with a minimum spend of $2,000.

The United MileagePlus program has recently increased the prices of its premium cabin Anytime awards, as first reported by Live and Let’s Fly. However, we wouldn’t recommend booking United Airlines’ Anytime awards. Instead, consider our trick to save hundreds, if not thousands, of miles on your next flight to Europe.

MileagePlus Saver and Anytime awards

United dynamically prices MileagePlus redemptions for flights on its own metal (i.e., flights operated by United). The cheapest Saver rates from the U.S. to Europe in business class start from 80,000 miles per person each way.

If you book during off-peak periods like winter, you can easily find these rates, which are a good price for a solid business-class product. However, these seats are strictly limited and likely unavailable over busy periods like summer.

United also offers Anytime awards, which are more readily available but require a lot more miles. These were previously priced from 155,000 miles one-way to Europe but have now risen to start from 200,000 miles each way.

Anytime redemption rates from the U.S. to South America have also risen from 155,000 to 220,000 miles one-way.

If you cannot find the limited Saver award availability and only Anytime availability is left, a round-trip business-class flight to Europe will require 400,000 miles, worth a whopping $5,400 by TPG’s August 2024 valuations.

You’re likely able to find a cash ticket with your choice of carriers and schedules for well under that price.

However, there is a way to avoid this latest devaluation. Flights booked with United miles operated by partner airlines are generally offered at set rates, and all award availability is at the Saver level. However, since United doesn’t publish partner award charts, these prices are always subject to change without notice — as we saw earlier this year.

United MileagePlus has a long list of partner airlines on which you can redeem miles. These include Star Alliance carriers Lufthansa, Swiss and Air Canada, plus nonalliance airlines Aer Lingus, Emirates and Hawaiian Airlines (interisland flights only).

While off-peak dates may show an 80,000-mile award is available for a United-operated flight, on busy dates, always look for flights operated by partner airlines, like the below Aer Lingus itinerary, even if they involve a connection. Doing so may save you more than 100,000 miles.

How to earn United miles

An easy way to boost your MileagePlus balance to get you on your next trip to Europe is to apply for a United cobranded credit card. Here are some of our favorite United credit cards:

• United℠ Explorer Card: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.

Staying connected to the internet on flights to Hawaii will now be possible on many more jets.

That’s thanks to Viasat’s third-generation F1 satellite, which was activated for commercial use Monday. One of the biggest improvements with the new satellite is that it provides long-awaited coverage on routes from the mainland to Hawaii.

Going forward, any Viasat-equipped plane flying from the mainland to Hawaii will now have access to a satellite signal and internet connection.

Historically, passengers flying on planes with Viasat antennas could not connect to the internet after leaving the coverage area above the continental U.S.

For some travelers, that’s been reason enough to travel on planes equipped with internet providers with global coverage, such as Panasonic. However, in the U.S., Panasonic internet service is largely limited to long-haul, wide-body jets flying for American Airlines and United Airlines.

While these carriers do sometimes deploy twin-aisle jets on select high-profile Hawaii routes, the majority of the mainland U.S.-to-Hawaii routes are operated by single-aisle planes that don’t feature Panasonic.

In fact, American, Delta Air Lines, United and Southwest Airlines all fly jets to Hawaii equipped with Viasat antennas that previously didn’t work on those particular flights.

The new Viasat satellite was tested over the first half of the year, and the provider was seemingly happy enough with the results to activate the enhanced service.

While Viasat has been talking about the third-generation satellite for quite some time, last year’s ViaSat-3 launch ran into major technical issues as the satellites were launched into orbit.

Viasat wasn’t initially sure whether the new satellites would be salvageable, but the company said:

“Extensive in-orbit testing demonstrated that all other systems on the satellite were operating at or beyond expectations. And while the antenna deployment anomaly resulted in a significant reduction in overall capacity, the resiliency and high-performance specifications of the ViaSat-3 satellite system still allows the satellite to support high-speed broadband services for aviation customers over North America, where the satellite is deployed.”

At the bottom of this story, you’ll find a complete breakdown of mainland-to-Hawaii flights by internet provider. Note that aircraft substitutions can always occur, and the data is based on Cirium schedules for flights scheduled for August 2024.

If connectivity is a must, check with your airline before your flight to ensure that your plane features connectivity over Hawaii.

Going forward, United will be the only carrier that doesn’t offer Wi-Fi on all Hawaii routes, as some of its jets still feature Thales satellites that only work over the continental U.S.

Note that Hawaiian Airlines is in the process of installing free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, which will work on all routes to the U.S. These retrofits are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
